How to Position Yourself As An Expert in The Age of AI

A few years ago, I found myself sitting on a bedroom floor at 11 o'clock at night with my laptop open and absolutely no idea what to do next.

My son's father had just been diagnosed with cancer. My son needed me. Life felt heavy. Business still needed attention. Clients still needed support. Bills still needed paying.

I remember staring at my screen wondering whether I should write a LinkedIn post, reply to emails, or simply close the laptop and cry.

There wasn't a playbook for that moment.

What surprised me most wasn't what happened during that difficult season. It was what happened afterwards.

The more honest I became about my journey, the more people connected with me.

The more I stopped trying to sound perfect, the more the right clients started finding me.

And honestly, that lesson has shaped everything I now teach as a business growth coach.

Because in a world increasingly filled with AI-generated content, automation, and perfectly polished messaging, the businesses that stand out are not always the loudest.

They're the most human.

The AI Problem Nobody Is Talking About

Let's be honest.

We are consuming more content today than any generation before us.

Every day we scroll through thousands of posts, videos, opinions, newsletters, and offers.

Yet most of it feels forgettable.

Not because the information is wrong.

Because it feels empty.

You've probably had the same experience.

You read a post and immediately think:

"That was definitely written by AI."

It sounds professional.

It sounds polished.

But it doesn't feel like anything.

The challenge for coaches, consultants, service providers, and experts today isn't creating more content.

The challenge is creating content people actually trust.

As an online business coach and business consultant, I see this all the time.

Business owners are producing content consistently, yet they're struggling to generate quality leads.

They assume they need a better funnel, more reach, or another marketing tactic.

Often, the real issue is much simpler.

Their audience cannot feel the human being behind the content.

Why Authenticity Has Become a Competitive Advantage

AI can write a blog post in seconds.

It can write emails.

It can write social media captions.

It can even mimic tone and style.

But AI cannot live your life.

It doesn't know what it felt like when your business nearly failed.

It doesn't know the client who changed your perspective.

It doesn't know the lesson you learned the hard way after making an expensive mistake.

That is your advantage.

In today's marketplace, your lived experience has become one of your most valuable assets.

The female business coach who openly shares her journey becomes memorable.

The business growth advisor who talks honestly about challenges becomes relatable.

The business strategy coach who explains lessons from real clients becomes trusted.

People are no longer looking for perfection.

They're looking for connection.

The Framework That Builds Trust Online

Over the years, I've noticed that the experts who build authority fastest tend to use three things consistently:

Story. Scars. Specificity.

Let's break those down.

1. Story Creates Connection

Think about the last time you truly trusted someone online.

Was it because they listed their qualifications?

Probably not.

More likely, they shared a story that made you feel understood.

Stories lower people's guard.

Stories help your audience stop evaluating you and start relating to you.

When I share the story about sitting on that bedroom floor during one of the hardest seasons of my life, people aren't connecting with my marketing strategy.

They're connecting with my humanity.

That's what stories do.

As a business growth consultant, I can teach lead generation systems all day long.

But when I share the experiences that shaped how I think about business growth, people understand why I care so deeply about sustainable business models.

People trust people.

Not profiles.

Not credentials.

People.

2. Scars Build Credibility

When I talk about scars, I'm not talking about sharing every painful detail of your life.

I'm talking about struggles you've worked through.

Challenges you've overcome.

Experiences that taught you something valuable.

Scars show your audience that you've been where they are.

Maybe you're a small business consultant.

You could talk about a client who was weeks away from shutting down before implementing a new strategy.

Maybe you're a business coach and mentor.

You might share how you rebuilt your pipeline after experiencing feast-and-famine revenue cycles.

Maybe you're one of many business coaches for entrepreneurs.

You can share the mistakes you made when growing your own company.

When people see themselves in your story, something shifts.

They stop wondering whether you understand their situation.

They know you do.

And that creates trust.

3. Specificity Builds Authority

This is where most business owners struggle.

They stay too broad.

They say things like:

"I help businesses grow."

That sounds nice.

But what does it actually mean?

Grow how?

For whom?

Using what process?

The clearer you become, the more trust you build.

Instead of saying:

"I help businesses grow."

You might say:

"I help coaches and service providers attract qualified inbound leads through authority-based content and trust-building systems."

Now people understand immediately.

Specificity helps your audience recognise themselves.

It helps them think:

"This is exactly what I'm struggling with."

As a business growth coach, I've found that specificity is often the difference between getting ignored and getting inquiries.

People don't buy because they understand what you do.

They buy because they believe you understand them.

A Real Example of This Working

One of my clients is a mortgage broker.

When he first came to me, his business was stuck in a frustrating cycle.

Leads would come in.

He would get busy.

Marketing would stop.

The pipeline would dry up.

Then he would panic and start chasing leads again.

Sound familiar?

The problem wasn't his expertise.

He had years of experience.

Fantastic client outcomes.

Deep industry knowledge.

What he wasn't doing was sharing any of it.

So we started incorporating story, scars, and specificity into his content.

Instead of generic finance posts, we shared real client situations.

Real lending challenges.

Real outcomes.

Within a month, four qualified calls were booked.

Not because he suddenly became more skilled.

Because people could finally see his expertise.

Trust was being built before the first conversation ever happened.

The Future Belongs to Human Experts

As AI becomes more sophisticated, many business owners worry they'll become less relevant.

I actually believe the opposite.

The future belongs to people who know how to combine technology with authenticity.

Use AI to help you create.

Use AI to support your productivity.

But don't outsource your voice.

Don't outsource your stories.

Don't outsource your humanity.

Because that is the part nobody can replicate.

The businesses that thrive over the next decade won't be the ones producing the most content.

They'll be the ones creating the deepest trust.

And trust has always been the foundation of sustainable business growth.

So before you publish your next piece of content, ask yourself three simple questions:

Does it contain a real story?

Does it reveal a meaningful scar?

Does it speak with genuine specificity?

If the answer is yes, you're already ahead of most people online.

And if you'd like help building your authority, positioning yourself as an expert, and attracting more qualified leads online, I'd love to help.
