Unlock a Happier You: Loving and Accepting Yourself 101

August 07, 20246 min read

Ever put on a pair of jeans and think, "Geez, when did these get so snug?"

Instead of shaming your glorious body, let's talk about how to accept and love yourself from the inside out. Because self-love is the one size that actually fits all!

According to the journal Self and Identity, self-compassion leads to a healthier approach to oneself and one's relationships.

What is Self-Love?

Loving yourself is more than just a bubble bath and a face mask.

Self-love is about seeing yourself, hearing yourself, and valuing yourself. It’s about accepting and loving yourself fully, embracing who you are, flaws and all.

When you honor your worth, you create a foundation of confidence and inner peace that radiates into every area of your life.

Your task is not to seek for love, but merely to seek and find all the barriers within yourself that you have built against it.

Rumi

Why is loving yourself important?

Loving yourself gives you control over your life. You realize you have choices, and those choices steer the ship. You know what they say, "Treat yourself so others know how to treat you."

When you focus on accepting yourself as you are, you create a strong foundation for healthy boundaries and self-respect.

Tips and strategies for practicing self-love

The Marvelous Mirror Mantra

Stand in front of the mirror, do a little dance, and then shout (or whisper if you have nosy neighbors), "I choose me, today and always. "

Repeat until it feels less weird and more awesome. Mantras aren't just for yogis; they're like the catchy pop songs of affirmations. They're hard to forget once they're in your head!

By repeating affirmations like this, you begin to explore how to understand yourself better, unlocking deeper layers of self-awareness and self-love.

The "Treat Yourself" Technique

Remember when you were a kid and getting a sticker was like winning the lottery?

Well, stickers might not do it for you anymore, but treats still will! Whether it's a slice of chocolate cake or a lazy Sunday binge-watching your favorite show, make time for a guilt-free indulgence. You deserve it!

The Emotional Wardrobe Makeover

You know that "meh" shirt you keep at the back of your closet? The one that brings out the color in your, um, dark circles? Time to say bye-bye. Keep stuff—clothes, friends, thoughts—that makes you feel like a million bucks. If it doesn't spark joy, it's time for it to find another home—maybe at your annoying cousin's place.

In the same way, forgiving yourself is about letting go of things—whether past mistakes or negative self-talk—that no longer serve you. When you clear out the emotional clutter, you make room for peace, self-love, and growth.

The "My Time is Me Time" Calendar Strategy

Ever feel like your schedule is one endless To-Do list designed to punish you? Change the game by intentionally blocking off "Me Time." Even if it's just 15 minutes to sit and smell the roses, or coffee, or, you know, that new car scent.

Stop being nice at your own cost

Consider the shit meter concept. It's like a gauge of how much nonsense you can take before your internal "Nah, I'm good" alarm goes off. Listen more in this episode of the Art of Life Podcast - Understanding, Accepting and Loving Yourself

You need to lower that meter to a level where it's just not accepting the B.S. anymore.

How loving yourself can change your life?

Your Body Becomes a Happy Haven

Guess what? Loving yourself doesn't just make your mind a pleasant place to hang out; it does wonders for your body too!

The American Psychological Association notes that higher self-love is linked to better physical health. Your immune system says "Thank you, next!" to illnesses way more effectively.

Stress? What's that? When you love yourself, your cortisol levels drop like a hot potato, and stress doesn't bother you as much. Not a bad deal for simply treating yourself with kindness, eh?

You Become a Relationship Whisperer

Oh, the magic you'll weave in relationships when you start from a place of self-love!

According to a study published in the Journal of Social and Personal Relationships, folks with higher self-esteem (aka self-love) have more satisfying relationships.

Remember, people treat you the way you teach them to treat you. When you've got that sparkle of self-love, it's like you've got a cheat code for healthier, happier relationships. Now, who wouldn’t swipe right on that?

The Motivation Machine is Unstoppable

"You are enough just as you are. Each emotion you feel, everything in your life, everything you do or do not do… it's all okay. You are an incredible human being."

Goodbye, procrastination! Adios, "I can't"! When you love yourself, you're not just painting rainbows in the sky; you're also turbo-charging your motivation engine.

According to studies in Positive Psychology, self-compassion is a significant predictor of intrinsic motivation—the kind of motivation that comes from your core and makes you wanna conquer the world.

In layman's terms, you'll feel like you've drunk five energy drinks, minus the jitters and the impending crash. It's like your life turns into a video game, and you've just activated the "Unlimited Energy" cheat code.

You're the Master of Your Emotions

When you're on good terms with yourself, your emotional sandbox becomes a much more fun place to play in. You manage stress like a champ, wrangle anxiety like a rodeo star, and serve up happiness like a five-star chef.

Financial High-Five

You're going to like this one; self-love might even be your ticket to the good life, financially speaking!

How? Well, self-love correlates with self-efficacy, which according to the Journal of Applied Psychology , plays a pivotal role in job satisfaction and performance.

So, don't be surprised if loving yourself also puts a little extra jingle in your pocket.

Next time you're sitting in a job interview, just channel your inner self-love diva. Before you know it, you're not just working the room; you're running it!

In a nutshell, the more love you radiate, the more you attract. Consider this your invite to the ongoing, never-ending, always fabulous party of self-love. After all, your relationship with yourself is the longest one you’ll ever have!
